Tie Care

Caring for a tie is an essential often overlooked.  It can’t just be left tangled in a drawer between uses.  Follow these tips to squeeze every last possible use out of your neck tie.

Removing the Knot

Ripping the tie off your neck can cause stretching and tearing in the delicate fabric.  Instead, disassemble the knot by using the steps used to tie the tie in reverse.  Pull the wide end out of the knot and then unravel the rest.

Storage
Storage is especially important, as this is where your tie will be most of the time.  To let wrinkles smooth out between uses, fold the tie in half and roll (neither too tight, nor too loosely) from the narrow end to the point on the wide end.  Make sure the point of the tie is pointing up to preserve its shape.

If you don’t have drawer space hanging the tie in your closet will work fine as well.  A special neck tie hanger is best to keep many ties straight an organized.  Make sure the ties aren’t cramped in your closet or they may wrinkle more.

Travel
Travel can be especially wearing on a tie.  When you’re on the go, make sure to keep the ties rolled up in someplace such as your shoes that will defend against mashing.  Your best alternative is to buy a special travel case that rolls the tie.  Be sure to avoid travel cases that fold the tie as this will create even more folding and deformities.

Fixing Wrinkles
Wrinkles are inevitable in a well-used tie.  You should always allow several days between uses of each particular tie to let the storage remove the wrinkles and rejuvinate the body of the tie.

However, if wrinkles are especially stubborn, steaming them with a handheld steamer is your best option.  If you don’t have a steamer, just drape the tie over your shower while you bathe.

If all else fails, dry-cleaners can generally remove wrinkles during the cleaning process.

Cleaning
When a tie is the focal point of your outfit, even the tiniest stains can ruin everything.  The first and easiest step is prevention.  Be mindful of the tie when eating or drinking.

However stains will happen eventually.  When it happens to you, the most important thing is to act quickly.  You can remove most stains by immediately blotting (not rubbing) the stain with cold water.  However, grease stains usually need professional attention.  A dry-cleaning service may be able to remove the stain if you bring the tie to them fast enough.  However, make sure you dry-cleaner can handle delicate ties so they don’t get any deformities in the regular cleaning process.
